The outgoing chairman of Africa's top most decision making organ, the African Union Teodoro Obiang Nguwema accuses the west over disrespecting the African continent and failing to accord Africa the recognition it deserves.
President Teodoro Obiang Nguema referred to his one-year reign as Chair of the AU as a turbulent year when Africa went through revolutions. Nguema slammed external interferences on the African continent, saying that they had elements of being disrespectful in the eyes of the African leaders and the people in general. Addressing the media in the Ugandan Capital Kampala, Obiang Nguwema called on the west to let Africa determine its own future and desist from applying double standards and manipulating the continent for their own selfish interests. Obiang Nguwema also warned Uganda to guard the newly discovery petroleum against western influence whose interest in the sector is deemed unfriendly in the progress of Africa. Obiang Nguwema called on all African states to unite and fight western powers in order to make Africa a strong continent. The two nations agreed on a bilateral cooperation in the oil and gas sector following Uganda's recent discoveries of petroleum. As Uganda embraces the oil resource currently estimated at 2.5 billion barrels, the East African country like many on the continent has been advised to guard against western influence with a keen eye or else drawn in what many have termed the oil curse.
